Methods for extending cable shelf life

May. 08, 2025

Mastering some methods can effectively extend the shelf life of the cable and ensure its safety and reliability during use.

1. Store it properly

The cable should be stored in a dry and cool environment, avoid direct sunlight and rain erosion. When storing, the cable should be placed on the support, avoid direct contact with the ground, to prevent moisture and mechanical damage. In addition, periodically check the temperature and humidity conditions of the storage environment to ensure that the cables are not affected by the environment.

2. Install it correctly

The correct installation of cables has an important impact on their shelf life. During the installation process, avoid excessive bending and stretching of the cable to prevent damage to the insulation layer. Select the right cable fixture and fastener to ensure that the cable is firmly fixed and reduce vibration and wear. At the same time, pay attention to the laying path of the cable to avoid contact with chemicals or high temperature sources.

3. Perform regular maintenance

Regular maintenance is an important measure to extend cable shelf life. By regularly checking the insulation layer and joints of the cable, timely detection and treatment of damage and aging phenomena can effectively extend the service life of the cable. For some key parts of the cable, the insulation resistance test and partial discharge test should be carried out regularly to ensure that the cable is in good running condition.

How can I tell if the cable is expired

Judging whether the cable is expired is an important link to ensure its safe use. There are several ways to determine this.

1. Visual inspection

Through visual inspection, you can preliminarily judge the use of the cable. The new cable has a smooth appearance and uniform color, while the aging cable may have surface cracking, discoloration and hardening. If these conditions are found, replace the cable in time.

2. Insulation resistance test

Insulation resistance test is an important means to judge whether the cable is aging. By measuring the resistance value of the insulation layer of the cable, you can judge whether its insulation performance is reduced. Usually, the insulation resistance value of the cable is lower than the standard value, indicating that the insulation layer has been damaged and needs to be replaced.

3. Partial discharge detection

Partial discharge detection is an advanced cable detection method, which can detect the small discharge phenomenon inside the cable and judge the degree of aging of the cable. By analyzing the partial discharge signal, the running state of the cable can be accurately evaluate.
